At Edenred, we talk with both employees and employers about the impact that saving commuting costs can have, and so we’re excited to share the MBTA’s newly announced Summer Program.
This initiative is designed to make traveling on the commuter rail more affordable at a time when travel is getting more expensive. And as a member of our Boston-based team, the program is close to home for me.
For many riders, this discount translates into substantial savings, especially for those who rely on the commuter rail daily for work or personal errands. The program also encourages more people to choose public transit over driving, which can lead to a greener, less stressful and cheaper commute.
With inflation and gas prices still affecting household budgets, every dollar saved on commuting counts. Commuters often face tough choices – drive and pay for parking, gas, and wear and tear, or find a cost-effective, reliable transit option. The MBTA Summer Program aims to tip the balance by lowering fare barriers, helping commuters take advantage of the convenience and environmental benefits of mass transit without breaking the bank.
Additionally, there are lots of events that will give Bostonians a reason to explore.
FIFA World Cup at Gillette Stadium – Even if you aren’t planning to attend, travelers will want to make note of when matches happen as it will cause a surge in ridership. Event trains run from South Station to Foxborough. Six of seven matches fall on weekday afternoons or evenings:
| Date | Kickoff |
| Saturday, June 13 | 9:00 p.m. |
| Tuesday, June 16 | 6:00 p.m. |
| Friday, June 19 | 6:00 p.m. |
| Tuesday, June 23 | 4:00 p.m. |
| Friday, June 26 | 3:00 p.m. |
| Monday, June 29 | 4:30 p.m. |
| Thursday, July 9 | 4:00 p.m. |
Sail Boston / Tall Ships – A fleet of Tall Ships will be in Boston Harbor July 10–16, with the Parade of Sail happening July 11 (9 AM–4 PM). Expect heavier crowds near downtown and waterfront stops all week.
This synergy empowers employees to save on their daily commutes, improving overall job satisfaction and retention.
Meanwhile, companies demonstrate care for employee wellbeing and sustainability goals – helping the environment by encouraging public transit use.
To get the most from the MBTA Summer Program, commuters should plan ahead and consider purchasing tickets in advance through the MBTA’s official platforms. And don’t forget to check schedules as they will be shifting to accommodate increased ridership during the FIFA World Cup.
